Government Peek
By Sheila M. Matibag
The Philippine Government is indeed undergoing various crises causing unresponsiveness to the needs of people. Saddening, people who are set to work in the position chose to be blind and deaf to the country’s demand. In connection to this, although Philippines is facing pending cases, issues and solutions, members of the government still have time in pointing fingers to their fellow government officials.
The Unending Pointing of Fingers among Officials
January 25, 2015, Filipinos lost a circle of heroes in the encounter in Mamasapano. This battle grounds 44 Special Action Force (SAF) Officers to death. Families of the victims continuously scream out for justice and act to put charges to former president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. Instead of giving the families sympathy and justice, P-No put the blame to Special Action Force chief Getulio Napeñas whom he said, allegedly lied to him about the plan.
According to an article, Napeñas pointed back, “Bakit kami lang? Bakit hindi kasama ‘yung nag-utos ng operasyon na ‘yun? Si Presidente Aquino, bakit hindi siya kasama sa kinasuhan dun sa Sandiganbayan, eh siya nag-utos at nagbigay ng basbas at nangasiwa ng operasyon na ‘yun talaga.” Even up to this day, the case is still unresolved.
The incident of Dengvaxia also leads to pointing of fingers of whom to be blamed. According The Manila Times, former Health Secretary Enrique Ona put the whole responsibility to his successor, former Health Secretary Janette Garin. Ona explained that even the Philippines experienced Dengue outbreaks year 2015, he did not deal about supporting the anti-dengue vaccine since it is still under development.
Earlier this month, several cities in Manila experienced water interruption under Manila Water. The controversy was blamed to Manila Water president Ferdinand dela Cruz. As Manila Water speaks to Senator Grace Poe, majority of the senators’ concern is about the reasons on why the interruptions are happening rather than paying much attention to resolutions.
Layers of issues are still pending and in need for governmental actions. Today, there are only minor improvements happening in the country because of unending pointing of fingers created by government officials. People in positions who are expected to have the abilities to answer a problem frequently look only for who is responsible not on how to solve the problem. If the administration continues its unending blame-game, then the instead of solving problems and cases, the Philippines always add up painful tragedies to its history. Stop the blame-game, start to make solutions.

The revival of death penalty is very likely to return under the present administration following the brutal slay of the 16-year old girl in Cebu. Despite the risks among people even in daylight and having CCTV cameras on the streets, death penalty is never a solution. Our justice system is flawed and still in favor with the nobles. The misjudgments are highly possible.

Handcuffed Childhood
Freedom is something that can be associated with childhood. Children embodies freedom in saying and doing things because of the limited knowledge that they possess. However, with the proposed lowering of the criminal liability age, there is a threat for the freedom that children hold. Will children still be outside playing games? Or will they be inside the jail, paying the price of the crime they should not be the ones to pay?
